Control Allergy and Asthma

A person can control his allergy asthma by following appropriate management protocol. Following are the general management strategy to improve health and wellbeing and thereby contributing to the improvement in allergy.

1. Clean your home once a week

2. Wash your garments with warm water and dry under sunlight

3. Wear face mask in cold weather, in windy season and in pollen season

4. Stay away from pets if you are allergic to pet dander

5. Remove carpeting and install hardwood or linoleum flooring

6. Encase pillows, mattresses in dustproof covers

7. Use air purifier /air conditioner

8. Eat healthy food and vegetables

9. Always check food labels if you have food allergy

10. Get Flu vaccine and Pneumonia vaccine

Point to be remembered in managing Allergy

Avoidance of the offending allergen is the best way to prevent allergy. One should know the causative agent to which he is allergic. A person is allergic to certain foods or had severe allergic reaction to a particular food then with he must be cautious when eating in restaurants and in social events.

Follow these steps:

  • Follow general guideline for any allergic patients as described above
  • Know what you’re eating and drinking. Always read the food labels while you eating something.
  • If you already had a severe reaction/anaphylaxis, wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace that will alert others that you had anaphylaxis.
  • Have an action plan ready. Always have an action plan of your allergy. This action plan will be prepared by your Allergist.
  • Have an Epinephrine / Adrenaline Autoinjector with you if you had anaphylaxis. 
  • Be careful while eating at restaurants.
  • Plan your meals and snacks before leaving home.

If your child has allergy, you must follow few steps to ensure your child is safe:

  • Always notify key people about the child’s allergy. Inform your child care providers, school personnel, parents of your child’s friends that your child has allergen. Tell them that certain food allergy may be life threatening and may require urgent intervention to save life of the child.
  • Explain allergy symptoms to persons who spend time with the child.
  • Have a written action plan.This plan should include the appropriate management strategies to care the child in case of allergy and in emergency case of anaphylaxis. One copy of the plan must be given to school authority.
  • Have your child wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace to display that he/she has severe allergy/anaphylaxis.

5. Wear face mask

6. Clean your home regularly

7. Stay away from pets

8. Avoid allergenic food if you have food allergy

9. Stay happy. Stay stress free.

10. Get Flu vaccine and Pneumonia vaccine

Point to be remembered in managing Asthma

If you are asthmatic then strictly adhere to the regime as prescribed by your physician. You should know the following things:

  • Know what aggravates your asthma symptoms and avoid them whenever possible.
  • Always an Allergist to do certain test to find out the triggering factors and discuss about possible management plan.
  • Always consult an Allergist if you are Asthmatic.
  • If you are asthmatic and a smoker. Then quit smoking at the earliest. Encourage your friends and family members to quit smoking.
  • You can do regular physical activity to improve general health. Do not do strenuous exercise as it can aggravate your asthma symptoms.
  • Eat healthy food and vegetables. Avoid hot and spicy food. If you had asthma and food allergy then be cautious when you eating in restaurants and in social events.
  • If you are obese then follow appropriate dietary and exercise plan to reduce weight. You can consult dietician if feasible.
  • In cold weather, in windy season and in pollen season be careful. You can wear face mask.
  • Clean your home at least once a week. Clean your bath, kitchen. Wear a mask when cleaning home. If you are allergic to dust then tell someone else to clean the room.
  • Pet dander can trigger asthma and allergy. If you had pet allergy then stay away from pets.
  • Emotional stress is a triggering factor for asthma. So stay calm and cool to reduce stress. Stay happy.
  • Take pneumococcal vaccine and take yearly influenza vaccine.
